HowTo: Setup a Hardware/Software Key-Logger in any system

All of us know about key loggers. What they do, they willsimply record all the key strokes typed in the key board. This technology iscalled key logging. in this post i am discussing about hardware and software key loggers, and how to setup them.

Hardwarekey loggers

Hardware key loggers are looks like a simple connector. Forexample to connect an USB key board to a ps2 connector we use a USB to ps2connector. The hardware key logger is looks like the connector, and alsoconnected in the same way. But hardware key loggers have its own memory, justlike your memory cards. Generally they are available from 512 kb.

Connect one end of the hardware key logger to the key boardand then connect it to the system’s ps2 connector.

Protect your media files with a Password and Convert them as a self playable

In this post I will show how to Password protect your mediafiles including audio and video files. Not only password protecting but also weare creating self playing files. i.e. after we creating the password protectedfile we don’t need any other software to play the file, when we open the fileit will play itself.

To protect a media file we need a software calledGreen-Force Player.

After installing the software open it.

It has a simple interface

Open a media file you want to protect.

Select ‘File’ menu and select ‘Load’

Then select the file you want to open…

After the file open Select ‘DRM’ menu , select Protect Video

Now the in the Protect Video dialog box give the passwordyou want to give.

Then select “Add Player to the Medial File” check box.

Then Press ‘Save’.

Now the process will start.

After complete the process go to the location of theoriginal file you can find a exe file with the same name as the selected mediafile.

Now open the exe file it will ask for the password.

Now the exe file can be played in any system (only inwindows OS).

There is no need to install any other software to play thefile.

Display a message for users who are going to logon

You can display a message for users who are going to logonyour machine.

This message will be displayed after the system starts andbefore the login screen appears.

Open control panel.

Select administrative tools.

Open local security policies.

Or simply go to run. Type ‘secpol.msc’.

In the Local Security Policies window………

Select local policies, and select security options

Now in the right pane search for ‘interactive logon: Messagetitle for users attempting to log on’

This is the title of the message. Double click on the policyand give the title which you want to give.

Then select ok.

Now we have to give the message

Select ‘interactive logon: Message text for users attemptingto log on’ policy.

Give the message body in the box. Select ok.

Now restart the system, the message will be displayed before logon screen.

HowTo: Shrink Partitions in Win7

Nowadays Branded laptops are shipping with only onepartition. That means when we buy a laptop which is operating systempre-installed. Then we need to shrink the size of the partition and make somemore partitions to store our personal data. Here how to do the shrinking ofpartitions in win7.

In the above picture we have two Hard-disks one is 20GB andanother is 500GB. In the 20GB HDD we have only one primary partition. I want toshrink the size of the partition to 10GB.

Right click on the primary partition, and select ‘shrink’.

The following shrink dialog boxwill appear. Give the amount of size to decrease the partition. Don’t give the all the available space inshrink box. Leave some space to operating system. If you have large disk like500GB it is good to leave at least 50GB to the operating system.

Select shrink.

Now the given amount of size willbe decreased. And we can see the unallocated space 10GB.

We can create the partitions inthe unallocated space, and can store the personal data.

To create partitions right clickon the unallocated space and select simple volume.

Click next in the ‘newsimple volume...’ dialog box.

And specify the size ofthe partition. click on next.

And again click on next. And thenthe following dialog box appears click on next.

Select finish. Then a new drivewith 10GB (in this example) will be created like this.

like this you can create any no. of partitions.

Ok First we need to know why we should become a PCDetective.

Daily we are doing lot of things with our PC. If we open a document with Microsoft word,generally we don’t think about the background process what is running. We arestarting the software [here MS Word] means we are loading a bunch of executablefiles, and the processes related to the software into our system.

In this way we are loading more and more processes and filesinto our system daily. In these processes, we are starting some manually, andsome are loading automatically.
In those automatic processes some processes aremay belong to a dangerous category, means the specific process can belong to avirus.

So to confirm our PC is not infected and not working as acourier for a hacker, we should have to become a PC Detective.

To investigate which processes are running in our pcgenerally we are use our Task manager, which is come with our OS.

We can get task manager by pressing “Ctrl+Shift+Esc“or rightclick on the taskbar and select “Start Task Manager”. In the processes tab wecan see the processes running in our system. We can also see the servicesrunning in our system by click on the “services” tab.

The Task manager is not sufficient to us. Because we canfind only some few processes with the Task-manager.

We need a software called “Process Explorer”.

Process explorer can explore all the running things in oursystem. Including running processes, services, and hidden processes also we canfind with the Process Explorer.

Open Process explorer. It will show you all runningprocesses in your system. Under the Process column it will show the name of theprocess, under the description tab it will show a little description about theprocess, and in the path column it will show the path process file i.e. thelocation of the file.

In the Process columnexpand the explorer.exe process by click on the ‘+ ‘sign. Under theexplorer.exe we can see the software processes, which are running graphicallyin our system.

Generally we can see a process called svchost.exe in thetask manager. This process will appear two or more times in the taskmanager. The process itself is not onlya process, under the svchost.exe process a group of system processes will run.So virus creators try to run their processes under the svchost.exe process.

To see the runningprocesses under the svchost.exe process

Expand the wininit.exe, expand services.exe, then expand asvchost.exe file.

Right click on a process, you will get a context menu.

If a process is running in the under explorer.exe and can’tvisible to us in the system, select window and select bring to front.

To set the priority to a process, select set priority, andthen select the desired level.

To kill a process select kill process.

To see the properties of a process, select properties.

To Show the .dll files loaded with a process select theprocess.

Select ”view” menu, select “lower pane”. Now the window willdivided into two parts in the lower pane you can see the dll files loaded witha selected process.

If you can’t see the dll files in the lower pane select“view” menu, select “Lower pane view”, and then select “DLLs”

If you want to know a running window process, that means ifyou open a software and wants to know the process, running by the software…

Select targeting button [find windows process]

And drag the wheel to the targeting window, and then therelated process will be highlighted in process explorer.

If you want to find a specified dll file select “find” menu,and then select “find handle or dll”

So in this way investigate all the process running in your PC.

How to: Testyour Hard Disk Health

Your system is suddenly restarting, or crashing. First checkyour hard disk for problems. Test your hard disk once even if your system isrunning fine. Because more number ofhard-disks is giving problems in these days.

In this article I will tell you how to check the hard diskfor bad sectors, and other irritating problems of hard disk. We areusing a little tool to check the hard disk. It is a great tool from WesternDigital Company the tool is “Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics”. Byusing this tool we can easily check our hard disks. By using this tool we can check all companieshard disks.

Download the "Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics" software from the Internet.

Open the software, and accept their License Agreement.

Click on “Next”.

The interface of the Program is mainly divided into twosections.

In the first section we can see the hard disks in oursystem.

In the last section we can see the partitions of a selecteddisk.

First see for smart status of your disk. If it is showingfail your disk is in a bad condition. Please note that if a pen drive isattached to our system, its smart status will display as fail.

Select the hard disk you want to test and click on the clickon the “Run tests” button to run a test

In the tests box select “Quick Test”

Click on “Start”

Close all the Running programs from the selected hard diskand click on “OK”.

Now the Quick test starts……..

After Completion of the test it will shows the results.

If the result is Fail the hard disk is defected. It is goodto take a back-up and contact the support for a replacement.

If it shows pass it is a sign for good condition. It is better to start an extended test toconfirm your hard disk doesn’t have any bad sectors. The Extended test willtake time to complete. The will depend on your hard disk capacity.

How to backup installed device-drivers

Always we are taking backups for important files, and folders. like that we can also back-up our device drivers which are already installed on our system.
what is the use of the taking back-up for drivers.
when we installing a new operating system we should install drivers for devices, which are presented in our system, for example network card, graphic card, sound drivers, etc.

if we formatted the system, and wants to do a fresh install, we must search device drivers on the internet, if we don't have a driver cd.
so we can backup drivers from our system, without downloading again. before you start taking back-up please confirm that your pc has no virus.
we need a software called driver magician.
download it from http://www.drivermagician.com/download.htm
go to the above link and select free version in the side-pane.
after downloading the driver magician install it. it has a easy interface to operate.

it has two panes. in the right pane it shows the devices installed on your system. in the left-pane it shows different sections like back-up drivers, restore drivers, update drivers, and uninstall drivers. we are using a free version so we can only back-up drivers from the system, and can also restore network and display drivers. for others we need a manual install.
to start the backup process select "Backup Drivers" in the right pane.
in the left-pane select the devices which are you want to back-up.
then click on "Start Back-up" button in the bottom.
now you have to select the folder, in which you want to the back-up.
after select the location click on ok.
the back-up process will complete in a few minutes.
you can also back-up drivers to a .exe file.
to do that go to options

and select the "Backup drivers to a self-extractor" and select ok.
now back-up your drivers to a exe file.
if you buy the software you get the more options like "Update Drivers" to update your drivers from the internet.

Get E-mail alerts to your mobile

Now a days all of us have several e-mail accounts in several web-based E-mail clients like Gmail, Yahoo, Hot-mail, and others. When a mail is received, they don't alert us by sending a sms.
Today we see how to get a sms when a new mail is coming to our inbox. This is a simple process and it's free.

To get sms alerts first requirement is your mail client should support email forwarding feature. of-course nowadays all popular e-mail clients are supporting this feature.
in this post i will show how to set gmail alerts to your mobile.
we are using way2sms service to get e-mail alerts. so you need a way2sms account. if you don't have a account please create one.
go to way2sms site, and create a account.
open your way2sms account.

click on mail alerts tab.
when we create a way2sms account, they also create a way2sms mail id like "123@way2sms.com" for receiving our mails.
first copy the way2sms mail-id.

now go to gmail account
then click on gear icon in the upper right corner, and click on "mail settings".
click on "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"

now select the button "Add a Forwarding Address"
now a dialog box appers, paste the way2sms mail id in it.
click on "Next"
now a confirmation code will be sent to your way2sms inbox.

goto your way2sms account click on "Inbox" tab.
click to view the message, and select the confirmation code in it.

if you don't receive a confirmation message click on "send verification again" in the Gmail settings.
again go to your Gmail account paste the confirmation code in the verification box, click on verify.

select "forward a copy of incoming mail to.." radio button.
select "Save Changes" in the bottom of the page.

now you can receive a sms alert, when a message is came to your Gmail account.

like this you can also set other mail clients alerts to your way2sms account. but your mail client must support forwarding feature.

Cleaning a infected system with Bootable Anti-virus

In the previous post Things to do for cleaning a infected system we see about how to clean a infected system, with boot-time scan. but in some situations, Anti-virus products are not installing, because of the virus. so in this post we see how to clean that heavily infected system.

in this situation we have to remove the virus with a bootable anti-virus cd.
we can download the bootable cd's from the internet.

these two cd's are free you can also download avast cd but it has only a premier version.

in this post we see how clean virus using avg rescue disk
first download the iso file, and write it to a cd.
then boot your system from cd.
select "AVG rescue cd" from the menu

select "Scan" from the next screen

now select "volumes", and then select which volume you want scan, if you dont know what they are select all from the next screen.

after that the AVG will scan your system for the viruses.
that time will depend on your hard disk capacity.
after complete the scan the "Scan result menu" will appear.
now select "Report File" to see the list of detected viruses.
here best option is "Delete All" it will delete all the infected files from your disk.
select this option after check the "Report file" other wise you will lose your important files if they are infected.
you can also handle each single file by select "Select" option.

after complete the cleaning restart your system by select "Reboot".

now your system is cleaned. before start cleaning it is better to backup your important files from the
hard-disk.

Things to do for cleaning a infected system

Read this post if you are in any of the following conditions

-- or you in a doubt that your pc is infected.

++ To confirm your pc has a virus or not, you can run free online virus scanners.
go to www.bitdefender.in/scanner/online/free.html and install a plug-in and start scan. it will takes minutes to scan your pc.

you can also go to www.pandasecurity.com to scan your computer in online.

don't think these online-scanners are substitutes for your full antivirus suits. run these when you are in a confusion whether your pc is infected or not.

After confirm your system has a virus, better to stop working with that pc, if you work continuously on the infected pc, it will infected completly with that virus

Start Cleaning :

To disinfect your system you need a good antivirus software. i prefer avast, because it has nice scan features, antivirus, anti-spam, and also anti-root protections- all these are in a free version. Also it has a great feature that is boot-time scan. that means it can scan a pc before it loads operating system.

So first download & install the avast anti-virus from the www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

after install the avast, set the boot-time scan first.

to set that open avast by double click on the avast icon in the system tray.

click on the scan computer.

select boot-time scan and click on "Schedule now" button.

now restart the system. after boot animation complete [ XP & Windows7], a screen appers like this

now avast will perform a full system scan, when a virus is detect it will ask what action action to take like this

press '1' to delete the file

press '2' to delete all the infected files

you can also move or repair the infected files. plese note that repairing a infected file is not possible in all situations. if you the file is not infected you can ignore it by pressing '7'.

after complete the scan the computer will starts normally.

Congrats....!

now your system is disinfected.

note: if your system is fully infected including core operating system files, which are required to start the system

these are also removed, so be-careful. first back-up all the required data in the my-documents, desktop, and c drive before starting the boot time scan.

Protecting your pendrive by write-protect it

Are you using your pen drive in many systems and infecting it regularly. if yes you must searching for a way to protect your pendrive's data. here is a way. by using this tip you can using your pendrive in a infected system without getting a virus.

Before use your pendrive in a infected system, first follow the following procedure.
this is a registry hack.
so first open your run box and type "regedit".
the registry editor will open now.

click on "HKLM_LOCAL_MACHINE".
select "SYSTEM".
select "CurrentControlSet".
now click on "Control"
here create a key with name "StorageDevicePolicies"
to create a key right click on "Control", select "new" and select "Key"
then type the name of the key as "StorageDevicePolicies"

after creating the key now you have to create a Dword value in it.
to do that right click on "StorageDevicePolicies", select "new", and then "DWORD Value"

type the name of the Dword as "WriteProtect".
double click on the "WriteProtect" and give value 1.

After complete the above procedure you can use your pendrive in the infected system, without any fear.
you don't need to restart the system.

NOTE:this procedure will writeprotect all the usb devices in that system, so you can't copy any data into usb drives.
to remove the write-protect go to the "WriteProtect" key and change it's value into 0.

Creating partitions with command prompt [For win7 & XP]

Yes! you can create partitions with the command prompt. if i guess right, you are think what is the use of the command prompt when we can access the GUI.but the Graphical User Interface is not always suits to our need. for example in Win7 we cannot create extended partitions easily.

So now we are going to create partitions with the command prompt.

first open the "command prompt" by type"cmd" in the run box.

type "diskpart", the Diskpart program will open.

Disk part is the microsoft's advanced disk management tool.

first you have to select your harddisk.

type "list disk" to list your disks.

now type"select disk X". 'X' is the no. of your disk.

now the harddisk will be selected.

to create a primary parttion type "create parttion primary size=XXXXX"

to create a extended partition type "create partition extended size=XXXXX"

now to create logical parttions in the extended partition, first you have to select the extended partition.
to do this type "select partition X", where X is the extended partition's no. to know it type "list partition".
after select the extended partition type "create partition logical size=XXXXX", to create logical partition with size "XXXXX".

Tuneup your start-up programs without install any software

first open the run box from your start menu or press "win + r".

type "msconfig" and press enter.
click on the "startup" tab.

untick all programs which you want to remove from your start-up.

remove permanently startup items:
open the run box or press "win + r".
type "regedit" and press ok.

select "HKEY_CURRENT_USER".
select "software".
select "microsoft".
click on "windows".
now select "CurrentVersion"and then select "Run".

You can backup all of your data in the hard disk with windows7 bootable DVD. This will help when your windows installation is get corrupted.

To do this you need

1. Windows 7 Bootable DVD

2. Internal or External HardDisk for data backup

Here are the steps:

-- Put your windows7 bootable cd in the dvd drive.

-- Boot from the dvd.

-- After loading all required files, The "Install Windows" Dialog box appears

-- Click on "next"

-- Now the next screen comes with a "Install Now" button, and "Repair Your Computer" option in the bottom.

-- We don't need the "Install Now" button now.

-- Select "Repair Your Computer"

-- You are asked to select "use recovery tools", or "restore your computer" in the "System Recovery Options" dialog box.

-- Select the first option i.e "use recovery tools".

-- Click on "Next"

-- Now the "System Recovery Options" comes with several repair options.

-- We need the "Command Prompt" which is in the bottom. so select it.

-- Now the "Command prompt" will be open.

-- You can also use a old trick to get "Command Prompt".

-- When the first "Install Windows" comes, Press "Shift + f10" Shortcut.

-- This will open the "Command Prompt" in the beginning. You don't need all these steps.

-- So any way we are in the "Command Prompt".

-- Type "notepad" to get the notepad window.

-- Press "Ctrl + O" or select "file menu", and click on open

-- In the "Open" Dialog box, ensure that you select "All Files" from the "File of Type" drop down box.

-- Now select "Look In" drop down list, and select the drive which have your precious data.

-- The data in the drive will be shown in the "Open" dialog box.

-- Right click on the folder you want to backup, and select copy.

-- You can't select more than one folder at the same time.

-- After copy the Folder select the drive in which you want to save the backup data.

-- Right click in the "Open" dialog box, select Paste.

-- In the same way copy all the important data to a safety place.

-- Please note that any "Copying..." like dialog box will not appear while the data is copying.

-- But you can see that the "Notepad" window will be in "Not Responding" stage in that time.

-- After complete the backup process close the notepad window.

-- To "Restart" or "Shut down" the system select the desired buttons in "System Recovery Options".

-- To continue with the installation click on "Close" Button, in the "System Recovery Options". then you will get the "Install Windows" Screen.
